Body

Surrounded by loved ones, Anthony Charles “Charlie” Boyett’s servant heart beat for the last time on December 17, 2021 after an unexpected series of debilitating strokes. Charlie was born in 1943 to Robert Edwin and Ella Marine (Merriman) Boyett.

He grew up in Tupelo, Oklahoma on the family farm raising peanuts, pigs, corn, and cows.

A young Charlie married Gloria Williams (Thompson) and together they had one son, Darrin. Gloria and Charlie parted ways and in 1973 he fell in love and married his soulmate, Carolyn Dian White. She had prayed for a man with big hands and a few weeks later, she met 6’3” Charlie and his giant paws. Together, they made a home on 5 acres just south of Guthrie, Oklahoma and had 2 daughters, Emily and Carrie. Carolyn would often be found waiting for him at the front door on a Friday night with their old ‘77 motorhome packed and ready to go on a spontaneous weekend adventure. Charles and Carolyn were quite the duo. She would see a need in the world and send him out to meet it…deliveries, home repairs, ditch rescues, pick ups, drop offs, pack this, move that, you name it-his servant’s heart was happy to oblige. He was “her rock”. After 38 years of marriage and caring for Carolyn in declining health, Charlie was widowed in 2011.

Charlie was lucky enough to find love again and in 2019, he married Carol Baker. They spent the last years of his life, happy in each other’s company visiting family, watching game shows, going to casinos and concerts, staying up late watching movies, and playing dominoes each night. (Carol hated to be the last to lose before bed and would often make Charlie play until she won…something that he thoroughly enjoyed razzing her about.)

Charlie worked construction as a young man and often claimed “I built that” when referring to various highways or the OKC Will Rogers World Airport. Charlie then became a truck driver. “Clodhopper” drove local routes and loved it. He was proud to carry special licenses that allowed him to haul hazardous materials and pull 3 trailers at a time. He called that “pulling triple pups”. No matter what he was driving, you could always count on him to raise his index finger off the steering wheel to greet any, and I mean any oncoming vehicles. He also made sure his kids knew how to work a CB radio and understood trucker talk including “taking a 10-100” or “a gator in the road”.

Charlie was even busier after retirement, watching grandkids, traveling, concert going, and “handymanning”. His favorite tools were duct tape and bailing wire. He became a fix-it man for Central Oklahoma Camp and complicated his tax returns each year when he turned around and donated back whatever he had made. Charlie was always happy to answer a call for help and would say “That’ll give me something to do!” The only time Charlie would slow down is when his beloved cat “Grotto” was in his lap and he refused to disturb him.

Charlie was slow to anger and quick to forgive. He was open minded and never met a stranger. He judged no one and accepted everyone. He loved God and others. He was never a “preachy” man but quietly demonstrated his faith through his selfless care for those around him.

Charlie was welcomed into heaven by his parents and wife (Carolyn).

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Guthrie, OK; son, Darrin Boyett and his wife, Velvet, and granddaughter, Kayla French and her husband, Max, of San Angelo, TX; daughter, Emily Boyett of Guthrie, OK; daughter, Carrie Geurts and her husband, Daniel, grandsons, Bennett (10) and Garrett (7), of Edmond, OK; his younger brother, Richard Paul Boyett and his wife, Jann, of Parker, CO; his baby sister, Carol Yarbrough, of Edmond, OK; and many other beloved friends and family.

Charlie is also remembered and loved by his wife’s (Carol) family: her daughter, Angela Baker and her wife, Maxine, their 6 children of Memphis, TN; her son, Tom, and his wife, Beverly, their 6 children of Bartlett, TN; her daughter, Dayla, and her husband, Duane, their 4 children of Guthrie, OK; and numerous great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the extraordinary staff at Integris Baptist Medical Center 601 ICU for their above and beyond care.

Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at Community Church in Guthrie with a lunch following at Central Oklahoma Camp. Charlie loved to eat and certainly didn’t want anyone to go hungry. The family kindly requests that masks are worn at the service to protect those at risk. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North 1st St., Guthrie, OK 73044.

Per Charlie’s request, memorial donations can be made to Make Promises Happen and Central Oklahoma Camp. Any donation would certainly have been met with a humbled response of “Gah-Lee” or “You gotta be kiddin’ me?”

There will not be any visitation.
